Welcome
This is and will be, I hope, the most frequently used word at Solomon’s United Church of Christ in Macungie. We have hospitality in our roots based on the German word, "gemuetlichkeit.” “Gemuetlichkeit” is a warm sense of deep hospitality that cannot be translated exactly into English. It is a sense of welcome that I felt the moment I walked into the open door of Solomon’s. Warmth and friendliness abound! At Solomon’s, there is a warm fellowship waiting to greet you the moment you walk in the door.
One day 10 years ago, when my son, Andrew, was seven, he hid behind the door at Christ Church in Norristown and jumped out to scare anyone who walked in the church.
As a parent, I took this as a "teaching moment.” I said to Andrew, “What are you doing?”
“I am scaring people as they come into church,” he said gleefully.
“Andrew, Andrew,” I said. “This is not a place to frighten people, but rather a place to share Christ’s love. Just think how much fun you could have making people feel ‘at home’ in our church.”
After that, Andrew continued to stand at his post, but as one of our best greeters.
As pastor, I hope that you, too, will catch the contagious spirit of hospitality at Solomon’s United Church of Christ. We are willing to help you in any way we can. Please join us in the spirit of “gemuetlichkeit!”
